The technology of fiber optics is constantly evolving. In 2021, technologies that were considered ground-breaking would be obsolete. We have come a long way since 56 Kbps dial-up to 50 Mbps copper connections and now 1 Gbps. It also depends on the country and infrastructure as well. I live in the Caribbean, the Cayman Islands, to be precise. The average speed for fiber optics in the Cayman Islands is 16.12 Mbps/s, whereas Taiwan’s internet speed is 85.02 Mbps/s.

A fiber optic internet connection with a download speed of 1000 Mbps has an upload speed of 1000 Mbps as well. How do you measure fiber optic internet speed? You can measure your internet speed with online speed test sites. However, many of them cannot measure ultra-fast connections like 1 Gig or higher.

Follow the instructions below for the best results.

  1. Close all applications before running the speed test.
  2. Open your browser and go to http://speed.googlefiber.net.
  3. The speed test might not appear if you have blocked pop-ups. Unblock pop-ups temporarily, and the speed test page will appear.
  4. Click the play button to start the speed test.
  5. The Google speed test page will display the upload and download speed results.

My humble abode has the fastest home internet speed in Cayman, not the fastest in the world. What is the fastest internet speed in your country? Let us know!
